Adult Protective Services
"Quality of life" may encompass many different characteristics. For older people it may mean simply to be safe and independent, to have the freedom to make their own decisions, to maintain the dignity that
should come with aging, and to continue to contribute whenever possible.
Howerver, some older adults may become less able to provide for their own needs, or may be more vulnerable to the abuse or exploitation of others. When this occurs, the Union County Department of Job and
Family Services will assist these people to find ways to fulfill unmet needs and to protect themselves from the abuses of others.
In situations where an older person no longer understands the consequences of his/her decisions, and is no longer able to protect himself/ herself from neglect, abuse, or exploitation, UCDJFS can bring this to the
attention of the Union County Probate Court for the intervention of the legal system, to remedy the problems.
The assistance provided through Adult Protective Services is guided by rules, policies, and procedures provided by Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and is intended to offer individuals the greatest
autonomy possible while preventing unnecessary institutionalization.
